Yoga, Baby and Me
Yoga enthusiasts know there is no better way to combine relaxation and exercise then by practicing the low impact, highly enjoyable type of meditative exercise called yoga. Those who are not familiar with yoga can use the excuse of having a baby to get involved in this stimulating, relaxing and healthy activity, by bringing your baby to yoga classes especially designed for moms/dads and their babies.
Yoga is a discipline originating in India and is part of the ancient religion of Hinduism. The word "yoga" means "to control" or "to unite". In Hatha Yoga, the form of yoga most commonly practiced in the west, the goal is to unite the body, mind and spirit through movement, postures, breathing and meditation. The body is improved in several ways: the circulation of blood is enhanced; internal organs and glands are stimulated and general health is improved. The belief that the breath is the source of life led to the development of controlled breathing exercises which focus the mind to enable the practice of meditation. In yoga meditation does not mean attaining a "blank" mind, but rather to experience a quiet or "settled" mind, which is a wonderful way to reduce stress.
Your baby can also experience many of these benefits, even from a very early age, by practicing yoga with you. Physically, one short yoga session is the equivalent of being carried and touched all day. At the end of the day your baby will sleep more deeply and healthfully. Developmentally, your baby's internal organs will be stimulated, improving the function of the nervous and digestive systems. Psychologically, the baby learns to cope better with stress and enhances the mother-child bond which increases communication between them.
Yoga is a perfect way to spend quality time with your baby. Babies' in-born love and physical need for movement and touch are combined naturally in the practice of yoga movements, positions and stretches. The pace is slow and concentrated, which is perfect for the baby's ability to integrate and absorb. Go yoga- and have fun with your baby!
