Creamy Cheese au Gratin Potatoes

The creamy cheese sauce helps to make these potatoes downright irresistible!

  • 4 russet potatoes
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1½ cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 onion, sliced into rings
  • Salt and pepper to taste

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a 1-quart casserole dish.

2. Slice potatoes into ¼ inch slices and layer half of them into the bottom of the casserole dish. Place onion rings on top before layering on the remaining potatoes. Add salt and pepper to taste.

3. Over medium heat, melt the butter. Add in the flour and ½ tsp of salt, stirring constantly for one minute with a whisk. Stir in milk.

4. When the mixture has thickened, add the cheese. Continue to stir the sauce until the cheese has melted (about a minute or so). Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes.

5. Place aluminum foil over the casserole dish and bake for 1 and a half hours. Serve immediately.
