Mother's Day Crafts: Homemade Soap

Here is a great idea for the mom who deserves a bit of extra pampering. While this may be cheating a bit, no one has to know that you didn’t make the soap from scratch. This requires adult supervision as you will be using the microwave.

For this childrens art project, you’ll need the following craft supplies:

  • Glycerin soap in a variety of colors
  • Microwavable cups
  • Soap or candy molds
  • Sharp knife
  • Newspaper
  • Spoons and/or coffee stirrers

1. Cover your work surface with newspaper.

2. Cut your soap into three pieces. If you plan to mix colors, then cut these pieces into even smaller pieces.

3. Place a piece of soap (or two if you want to mix) into your cup and microwave on high for 10 to 15 seconds or until it liquefies. NOTE: If your soap is not made of pure glycerin, it will not liquefy.

4. Use a potholder to remove the cup – contents will be hot!

5. Mix the contents thoroughly before pouring it into your molds. Let it cool for five minutes or so before removing them. If they don’t want to come out, stick the mold into the freezer for a bit. Alternatively, you can add some olive oil to your soap which will not only help to get the soap out of the mold later on, but it will also make the soap more moisturizing.
