I was watching the news last night and saw a comment from a supermarket owner saying he couldn't give a couple with a newborn baby formula because he didn't have any. It made me remember when hurricane hit our area and what I experienced.

Rylee was 8mths old and barely on solids. I remember standing in line at the assistance office with the only baby that wasn't crying. Mums everywhere were carrying crying babies who needed to be fed but with no power in town many mums had no way to boil water to make formula. It made me very grateful to be a breastfeeding mum.

Our house was without power for only 7 days (some in the area 3mths+). We cooked using a BBQ and that was hard enough. Rylee survived on just breastmilk for those 7 days.

I must admit I am a little scared for them as well. During disaster situations its like feeding in a 3rd world country and many babies in those situations get very very sick because the water just isn't up to scratch (even when the authorities tell you its fine)

I was thinking the same thing... good thread... I actually thought about this because, if I was in this situation i would be stressed and figured my supply might diminish.. and thought what would I do?

On the council websites they have, what to put into a "suvival kit" one of the things to put in is a tin of formula. I thought this was a great idea..

Many years ago they used to feed babies on sweetened condensed milk, diluted obviously so i guess while not ideal, and push comes to shove you could do that...

I think breastmilk may help :)
