i'm breastfeeding and I intend to breastfeed my child for atleast a year.

the problem i have is that my nipples get sore and sometimes it already bleeds.

i'm afraid to apply any kind of ointment coz it might affect my baby.

what can i do?

...hi there! I've been breastfeeding too and at random i also get sore nipples. I just leave it a.t rest for at least a day or two and it's gone. but a friend of mine actually applied a cream for her nipples, i just don't know what it was...he said it was safe to use.

maybe there's something wrong with how you are positioning your baby. that could actually be one factor in causing nipple soreness. try to check out tips on proper positioning in breastfeeding your little one.

you can actually take a mild pain reliever around 30 minutes before breastfeeding. you can take either advil or tylenol.

is it safe for me to take medication while breasfeeding?

isn't it going to affect my baby?

it actually works just fine, rachel. but if you're not comfortable taking meds while nursing, you can just apply warm compress before and after nursing. that can als0 offer relief.

Nursing frequently can also be pretty helpful. If you're baby is not too hungry, then there is a lesser tendency for the baby to feed aggressively. Just be mindful of his/her feeding schedule.

my sister used a hydrogel pad to soothe her sore nipples. she also finds the application of warm moist washcloth helpful. if it becomes too painful or uncomfortable for you, it's always best to check with your doctor.

thanks ladies! this could be really helpful. I'll try to check that "hydrogel pad" that you mentioned christa. I've done warm compress but sometimes, it's not enough.

Rachel, are you switching between breasts? That will help relieve the soreness.

If you are determined to only feed the baby breast milk but your breasts are too sore, there is always the breast pumps option. I am sure you have heard of it. It is still feeding the baby your milk but indirectly.
