When is the time to give or make your babies drink water? and how many ounces?

Jersey99MOM - February 22nd, 2011 4:56 AM

newly born babies can already drink water. you don't have to measure the water. the baby will stop drinking water if they've already have enough.

water for newborn babies is never prohibited. actually, no need to measure the amount of water that you give to your baby. it is liquid. purely liquid. make sure though its a purified water.

hi there. i believe water is not given to a newborn baby. you have to wait atleast 6 months before you feed your baby water.

sofia - February 23rd, 2011 2:06 AM

Mrs. smith - why do we ave to wait for atleast 6 months? i mean, even if it's clean water (distilled or something)???

christa_marks - February 23rd, 2011 2:09 AM

hi all! Mrs. smith is right. giving water to a newborn could actually be fatal. with what i've learned from a friend who is a nurse, she said it could cause something called like "intoxication". water can interfere with the electrolyte balance of the baby and that it can lead to something as serious as coma.

gosh! well, that's good to know... how about those babies who takes formulated milk instead of breastmilk? I thought formulated milk can cause constipation to babies and that's why they encouraged to drink water... is that true?

Mrs. Smith - February 23rd, 2011 2:15 AM

Christa was able to explain it quite well. As for babies who takes formulated milk to replace breastmilk, water is not necessary. In fact, water can prevent your baby from feeding as much milk as she should since water can make her feel full. Thus, it can interfere with your baby's ability to absorb all the nutrients she/he needs.

that's right!
best time to give your child water would be when he/she starts eating solids, which I believe happens mostly during 6-8 months old.

water is essential to the body, we don't want our babies dehydrated so maybe on its 6 months he/she can drink water

The milk the baby drinks already contains as much water that is needed. There is no worry about having the baby drink water.

And if you have to, make sure that it is distilled and bottled water. Even then, you have to boil it and let it cool first before giving it to the baby.

i agree with auburn_1980. during the 6 month of the baby, i think most of the doctors advise us to let the baby eat solid food. they need water then.
