at what age will a child learn to eat on his own? i envy other children who at the age of 2 or 3 know how to eat on their own. my girl sofia, still needs to be spoon fed and she is almost 4 years old and already going to school.

i have a friend who still feed her daughter at 6 and at the same time she can also eat by her own. my daughter who's at 1 loves to eat on her own and she enjoys eating together with us so i don't really like having hard time waiting for her to finish eating so we can start eating too. the only problem is that she eats too slow and at the middle of it, she tends to play with the food. i really don't mind food spill offs and food remnants so she could learn well the use of spoon and fork but still needs to keep an eye when i feel like she's starting to trip off.

same with my son, he still wants to be spoon fed by me. there are times when he wants to eat on his own but also eat very slow and will not be able to finish his food but at least he is learning to eat by himself and he is now 3 and a half years old.

It is fine if the child still can't manage to eat on his/her own yet. Every child has his/her own milestone and you need not pressure it because it will just come out naturally and with much benefits.

i am very particular with kids who have this eating habits of playing around same like my_sweet_daughty's post. i also don't mind messed up tables but as much as possible i try to impose disciplinary actions when it's too much.

one thing also, i have read (can't remember the source), that feeding time should be paired with playing time. i am quite confused by such technique of getting the child to learn eating on his own. any views about it?

It should not be paired with playing time. If you want your child to eat properly and well train in eating you should see it to it that they are focused on it.
