my husband and i are already planning to have a baby... my sister wants me to take folate or folic acid to "prepare my body".. i don't like the taste of it and my sister can't really explain what it is for... can anyone tell me the relation of folic acid and pregnancy?

Hi Bettina. Folic Acid is important in an expectant mother for a healthy pregnancy. Lack of folica acid in the diet is associated with different childhood disabilities or defects, like the cleft lip/palate.

there are other ways of getting folic acid like lettuce, lentils, black eyed peas, okra, orange juice or asparagus.

What do you mean you don't like the taste? If it is already present in foods like lettuce then it's better to make it into salad. Everybody loves orange juice and I am sure that you love it too. BTW, concentrated or fresh is best when it comes to OJ.

Folic acid is important for your baby's brain development. If you don't like taking supplements then stick to foods that are rich in folic acid just like eLeOnOr suggested. Also there are cereals and other food stuffs that are fortified with folic acid.

Folate is essential in preventing birth defects during pregnancy. It also reduces the mother's risk to preeclampsia. MOthers will need 400mg of folic acid per day beginning at least 1 month before you are pregnant.
