We live in a very "verticle" apartment and I'm terrified of carrying the baby up and down the steps. I need to have one hand on the railing. How do other mothers do this? I ordered a moses basket but it came with a warning not to carry the baby in it so maybe it is not strong enough.

you need to buy a baby backpack so if you are going to descend or ascend the stairs, you need not to worry about the baby falling off and you can hold the railings firmly.

i agree with Rusellin but if at any point you have a choice to transfer in a more safer place where there is no stairs to climb on going to your crib, then do it. it is also for the benefit of your child who will eventually grow up, avoiding falling over the stairs.

i think you need a sling for your baby so you can handle railings while your going up and down the stairs and to be able to step on it carefully.

I have the same issue in my house. Scares the heck out of me. I check to make sure there are no items on the steps before starting. Then hold the baby to my chest fully supported bottom and hand on back of head. I tell him "no wiggling, we are on the steps' every time, and he always holds still for me. Then I take it one stair at a time. In my case, I can also lean a shoulder on the wall and sort of slide down. Count, but always test with toe to be sure I really counted right when I think I'm at the bottom.

I carry my little one in my babybjorn or sling. I was terrified of carry her up and down our steps without it.

We used the infant carrier/car seat to go up and down for about the first month or so.

A babybjorn is probably your safest and best bet if you have to have one hand on the railing. It takes a minute to get the baby strapped in, but he/she will be snug and safe while both of your arms remain free. Some second hand stores sell these carriers for a little less than retail stores.

If I have to carry baby up and down stairs (we have stairs in our home and the doctor's office has them), I put baby on my hip, wrap her tightly with one arm, and hold onto the railing if necessary. I also walk sideways (I feel more stable than just facing forward, especially down steps). If she's in her carrier, I hook the handle with one arm and do the same as above. When she was smaller, I'd hold her so her whole body was supported carefully by one arm. Just go slow and you'll be alright.
