Mentally retarded children would really need much patience, love and understanding from family and loved ones. It is not easy to raise a mentally retarded child, but there are ways to make your and your child's life a little less uncomfortable. Currently, their are thousands of agencies that can provide assistance in giving care for MR patients. You just need to reach out. Do not be ashamed, providing the best care for your kid is not something you should be ashamed of.

Exactly! there is nothing embarrassing about asking help if it already involves your loved ones. A child who is MR also deserves a good life no matter how odd his/her situation is.

What exactly causes mental retardation?

-just like any other disorders or diseases there is no EXACT cause of mental retardation. However, it is associated with several risk factors. Infection (before, during or after giving birth) is one, another is chromosomal abnormalities and so on.

Since this condition is irreversible, the goal for applying "treatment" to these kinds of children is to maximize their potential for them to live as normally as possible.

Correct! Unfortunately there are some people who do not understand the situation so instead of helping out, they make fun of people with this disability and it really disgusts me to see people act that way. I say, KUDOS to parents and families who raise MR children.
